How To Receive An Answer From God

Prayer

Filed In

Many of us have wondered, How do I receive an answer from God? The simple truth is that asking is essential for answered prayer, and obedience opens the door to God’s response.

Some might think, God already knows what I need—He’ll help me if He wants to. But Scripture teaches otherwise.

That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along… A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” (Mark 4:35-41)

In this passage, Jesus was fully aware of the storm raging around them, yet He did not act until the disciples cried out for help. This shows us a key principle: When we pray, we demonstrate our faith and trust that God is able and willing to help us.

Ask To Receive Answered Prayer

Prayer is powerful. It is our way of inviting God to intervene in our lives. We must first believe in the power of His Word and trust that His promises are true.

“The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” (James 5:16b NIV)

God’s Word is alive and active. Just as a parent keeps their promises to a child, God remains faithful to His Word. When we pray with faith, we align ourselves with His will.

For example, we might pray: “Lord, You said, ‘By Your stripes, I am healed’ (Isaiah 53:5). I stand on Your Word and refuse to give power to my illness. I declare healing over my body in Jesus’ name.”

God did not leave us to rely on luck or chance. He provided His Word, filled with promises that we can claim.

“I would have fainted had I not known I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” (Psalm 27:13)

Speaking God’s Word in Prayer

God’s Word carries creative power—yesterday, today, and forever. Memorizing and declaring Scripture strengthens our faith and aligns our hearts with His will.

A powerful prayer might include:

“Lord, You promised that if I follow Your commands, I will be blessed, my children will be blessed, my enemies will be defeated, and all that I touch will prosper and succeed” (Deuteronomy 28).

Obedience Unlocks God’s Power

Prayer becomes even more effective when we live in obedience to God’s Word.

“We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does His will.” (John 9:31)

The key phrase here is “those who do His will.” True obedience is impossible without the Holy Spirit. However, when we take the first step in faith, God empowers us to walk in His ways.

Followers of Christ strive to align every part of their lives with Him. They avoid knowingly engaging in anything that displeases God. If they stumble, they quickly repent and seek to follow Him more closely.

Asking Is the Key to a Powerful Life

“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know Him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in His holy people, and His incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength He exerted when He raised Christ from the dead.” (Ephesians 1:17-19)

An inheritance is received after someone’s passing. Jesus died and left us His last will and testament—the New Testament. Within it, He declared that His followers have inherited every promise written in Scripture, including the authority to pray boldly and expect results.

Let’s make prayer a daily practice with our families. Record your answered prayers as a testament to God’s faithfulness. This will strengthen not only our own faith but also the faith of the next generation.
