SIN: Missing The Mark

Kingdom of God, Prayer

Filed In

In Greek, the word for sin means “to miss the mark,” much like an archer missing the bullseye. The mark we miss is God’s best path for our lives.

To willingly sin is different from being unaware of God’s righteous path. However, knowing God’s Word and choosing to ignore it is sin. Sin is serious because it can hinder our prayers from being answered.

“We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does His will.” (John 9:31)

“If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.” (Psalm 66:18)

“But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden His face from you so that He will not hear.” (Isaiah 59:2)

Common Sins Today

  • It’s not an affair; it’s adultery.
  • It’s not casual sex; it’s fornication.
  • It’s not gay love; it’s sodomy.
  • It’s not pro-choice; it’s murder.
  • It’s not exaggeration; it’s lying.
  • It’s not true concern; it’s gossip.
  • It’s not admiration; it’s lust.

Many of us have engaged in some of these sins, but we should not take them lightly. The powers of darkness tempt us to sin, but God calls us to repentance. If you’ve been married for years yet engaged in premarital sex, repentance is still important. Confessing our sins clears the way for answered prayers and divine guidance in our lives.

Sin Blocks Our Blessings

Sin distances us from God’s blessings because it opens a door for Satan to enter. Until we repent of sin, that door will be open for Satan to destroy relationships and what ever he can get his hands on. God is not the reason why our prayers are hindered. He does not impose restrictions to limit our joy but to protect us from harm and ensure our prayers are answered. He is a loving Father who guides us for our good, even when we don’t fully understand His ways.

The Power of Repentance

To repent means to change our mind. When the Holy Spirit works on our spirit we will acknowledge that Jesus’ way is the only way to true joy and peace.

Belief in God is more than accepting Jesus’ existence—it means embracing His Word, the Bible. Rejecting His teachings is rejecting Him.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.” (John 1:1-2)

Jesus’ words are unshakable, just as He is. When He speaks, His words hold power and truth. His promises never fail, for He even sacrificed Himself to uphold His Word.

The Safest Way to Live: Obedience to God

Living in obedience to God’s Word puts us in a powerful position for prayer. There is nothing greater than the ability to pray with authority:

  • Healing: “Lord, You said in Psalm 103 that You heal all our diseases. I thank You in advance for healing me/ my child.”
  • Marriage Restoration: “Lord, You said no weapon formed against us shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17). Thank You for protecting my marriage.”
  • Financial Provision: “Lord, You promised that if we honor You with our wealth, our barns will be filled with plenty (Proverbs 3:9-10). Thank You for leading me into abundance.”

Through prayer, we can receive peace, joy, love, and provision.

What worldly possession compares to the power of a strong prayer life? A big house? A luxury car? Accomplishments? Popularity?

Nothing compares to a close relationship with Jesus and the privilege of powerful prayers. This is the reward of an obedient heart.
