Welcome to My Blog
It seems natural to ask God for assurance when making an important decision. At a crossroads, we may long for a clear sign to confirm that we’re following His will. Even those who read the Bible daily can experience moments of uncertainty, wondering, Is this really what God wants?
But is it okay to ask for a sign? According to the Bible, yes. Many people in Scripture sought signs from the Lord—and received them.
Start with Scripture
Before asking for a sign, begin by seeking wisdom in God’s Word. The Bible is our ultimate guide, and the Holy Spirit can illuminate Scripture to provide direction. Before diving in, take a moment to repent and forgive others so that nothing stands between you and God’s guidance.
“We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but He is ready to listen to those who worship Him and do His will.” (John 9:31 NLT)
After repentance, sit quietly with your Bible and ask God to reveal a verse or passage that speaks to your situation.
“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right. It is God’s way of preparing us in every way, fully equipped for every good thing God wants us to do.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 NLT)
If, after seeking guidance in Scripture, you still feel uncertain, then it may be time to ask for a sign.
Biblical Examples of Asking for a Sign
One of the most well-known examples is Gideon. He wanted to be sure he was following God’s will, so he asked for confirmation through a sign.
“Then Gideon said to God, ‘If You are truly going to use me to rescue Israel as You promised, prove it to me in this way: I will put some wool on the threshing floor tonight. If the fleece is wet with dew in the morning but the ground is dry, then I will know that You are going to help me rescue Israel as You promised.’ And it happened just that way…Then Gideon said to God, ‘Please don’t be angry with me, but let me make one more request. This time let the fleece remain dry while the ground around it is wet with dew.’ So that night God did as Gideon asked.” (Judges 6:36-39 NLT)
Gideon’s story reassures us that God understands our need for guidance. He is patient with those who genuinely seek His will.
My Personal Experience with Asking for a Sign
I once sought a sign when deciding whether to include the word “Catholic” in the title of my book. While reading my Bible one night, the thought suddenly came to me. I asked my daughter what she thought, and she bluntly replied, “Mom, Catholics won’t read your book!” Her response made me second-guess my idea, so I decided to ask for a sign.
I closed my Bible and prayed, “Lord, if You want me to use ‘Catholic’ in the title, let me open to the verse that says: ‘These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught.’” (Matthew 15:8-9 NIV)
Then, with my eyes closed, I opened my Bible and placed my finger on a verse. When I looked down, my finger was on that exact passage! I had my confirmation from God.
This was not the first time I had received a clear sign. God, in His kindness, has given me several over the years. If you earnestly seek an answer, ask with all your heart and be open to whatever God reveals—whether or not it aligns with your desires.
God Invites Us to Ask
God understands that we need reassurance. He doesn’t rebuke those who genuinely seek His direction.
“Ask the Lord your God for a sign, whether in the deepest depths or highest heights.” (Isaiah 7:11 NIV)
If you’re at a crossroads, start by seeking wisdom in Scripture, repenting, and praying. If clarity still eludes you, don’t be afraid to ask for a sign. Just be ready to follow where God leads—His way is always best.
