What Is Our Life Purpose?

Kingdom of God, Parenting

“What is our life purpose?” This is a question many of us start to ask when we are in the young adult years. We receive our answer after we trust in Jesus as our Savior and Redeemer.

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”(Matthew 22:36-40 NIV)

If the greatest commandment from the Lord is to love, then our purpose in life is to stay close to the source of love-the Lord Jesus Christ- who will guide our lives towards the best accomplishment of this commandment.

This is quite contrary to the opinion in the world, wouldn’t you agree? The opinion in the world is that we figure out our own life purpose which is always tied to acquiring money and success as the world defines success.

But what if our climb to the top requires us to neglect our family, the main source of love in our lives?

Then, no matter how much money or acclaim we earn in life, the pain we caused others on our climb to the top will be built into the end result. Our worldly success, we will find, has robbed us of love and stripped us of close loving relationships.

Success isn’t wrong. Money isn’t evil. What God teaches us however, is that when we learn from Him we will end up with the desires of our heart.

“Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.”(Psalm 37:4)

Loving Those In Our Community

We can take the commandment to love others into our work, neighborhoods, towns and beyond. Loving people where they are, can be the conduit to leading others into a relationship with the Lord.

A relationship with the Lord comes through hearing His Word. We can hear it during a message (in a Bible based church) and “hear” it by studying His Words in the Bible. During this time in God’s Word, God can supernaturally soften a hurt soul and give them hope, lifting their burden and bringing them joy.

It all starts with love. Those we offer love and compassion to, will begin to understand that God loves all of His people and desires to show everyone the best path in life, free of self induced heartache.

“For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you a future and a hope.” (Jer 29:11)

I would venture to say that anytime we have a dilemma or a question as to which choice to make, if we choose love we will always be in the will of God. This does not mean we should support everyone or everything. No, we should love everyone and lead them into to lifestyle that is revealed in the Bible. Therefore we should judge behavior against the Word of God so we know what choice is best for ourselves, but we should not judge others, meaning condemn them or make them feel bad in any way.

Parenting with the greatest commandment in mind- love others like yourself- keeps us on track when we run into difficult situations with our children present. Instead of berating someone for their dress, lack of social graces or choice of words, we need to remind ourselves that not everyone had good guidance from their parents, enough food and safe living conditions while growing up. All of these things contribute to the type of adult one becomes. Therefore, when we love the unlovable we are acting like Jesus and teaching our children to do the same. And this heart posture can bring someone to commit their life to Christ!
