What Is Our Life Purpose?

“What is our life purpose?” This is a question many of us begin to ask in our young adult years. The answer becomes clear when we place our trust in Jesus as our Savior and Redeemer.

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”(Matthew 22:36-40 NIV)

If the greatest commandment from the Lord is to love, then our purpose in life is to stay close to the source of love—Jesus Christ—who will guide us in fulfilling this commandment in the best way possible.

Conflicting Views Of Life Purpose

This perspective on our purpose stands in stark contrast to the world’s opinion, wouldn’t you agree? Society often teaches us to define our life purpose by personal ambition, financial gain, and status. But what if the pursuit of success leads us to neglect our family—the very people who offer us the deepest love and connection?

No amount of money or worldly acclaim can compensate for relationships lost along the way. True success, according to God, is not measured in wealth or status but in love, faithfulness, and the fulfillment of His purpose for our lives.

Success and money are not inherently wrong. However, Scripture reminds us that when we prioritize our relationship with God, He aligns our desires with His perfect plan.

“Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4)

Loving Others Is Our Life Purpose

God calls us to take His commandment to love into every area of our lives—our workplaces, neighborhoods, and beyond. When we love people where they are, we become vessels for leading them into a relationship with the Lord.

A relationship with God begins by hearing His Word, whether through a Bible-based church message or personal study of Scripture. During these moments, God can supernaturally heal a wounded heart, offer hope, and bring joy to those in need.

It all starts with love. When we extend kindness and compassion, people begin to understand that God loves them deeply and desires to guide them on the best path—one free from self-inflicted heartache.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

Choosing Love in Every Situation

When faced with a dilemma, we can ask ourselves: Which choice aligns with love? Choosing love always keeps us within God’s will. However, this does not mean supporting every behavior. True love guides others toward the biblical path of righteousness, rather than endorsing actions that go against God’s Word. We are called to discern right from wrong through Scripture, but we are not called to condemn others or make them feel unworthy.

Parenting with Love at the Center

Keeping the greatest commandment in mind—loving others as ourselves—helps us navigate parenting challenges. Instead of criticizing someone for their appearance, manners, or speech, we should remember that not everyone grew up with stable homes, adequate food, or strong role models. These factors shape who they become. When we love the “unlovable,” we reflect Christ’s heart and set an example for our children, teaching them to extend grace to others. This simple act of love may even lead someone to commit their life to Christ!

Food for Thought,
